Zinc is an essential mineral required by every cell in the body. It is concentrated in the muscles, bones, skin, kidneys, liver, pancreas and eyes, and in men, the prostate gland. Zinc is known to heal the skin and speed up the process of wound healing and assists in preventing scars. It also helps the body process essential fatty acids. It is essential for normal pregnancies and our growth as it is involved in the manufacturing of DNA. It also plays a role in the development of normal sight. It is not produced in the body so the body depends on external sources for its supply.
Zinc plays a critical role in hundreds of body processes, from cell growth to sexual maturation, immunity, and taste and smell.
Zinc is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system. It helps against colds, flu, conjunctivitis and other infections. It is involved in assisting a variety of other symptoms for example: rheumatoid arthritis, lupus fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, sex and thyroid hormones, fertility, shrinkage of enlarged prostates in men and stabilizing insulin levels.
Studies have shown that zinc supplementation improves acne. It has been as effective as tetracylcines (250mg) and minocylcine (100mg) on lower dosages but when compared to the higher dosages of tetracycline (500mg) the antibiotic was more effective. Zinc (30mg) taken for 2 months has been shown to have clearer complexions and in some studies have shown results to be comparable to antibiotic tetracycline. Excessive intake of Zinc may cause a copper deficiency because it binds with zinc reducing its absorption.
